Diane’s father James was a pastor. He called everyone Beloved — every person he ever met, every name he ever learned. It was not a title. It was the way he actually saw people. He had the biggest laugh in any parking lot he was ever in. You could find him by it.
He wore the same brown suit every first Sunday for thirty years. He drove to bedsides when his hands were old and the roads were dark. He prayed with his hands on their hands. He sat with people until they were ready to stop being afraid. He hummed while he drove — quiet, barely audible, the same melody he always hummed when he thought he was alone.
The morning he was found, his Bible was open on the table. He was already in prayer. The last drive anyone saw him take, he was humming. Diane told us: she had been in the backseat of that car a hundred times and never once asked him what the melody was. She would give anything to know.
